The IRS K2 gun is a high‑velocity oxy‑fuel (HVOF) gun operating on kerosene. The IRS K2 gun functions by burning a mixture of kerosene and oxygen in a combustion chamber, followed by expansion of the combustion products in a supersonic Laval nozzle. This operating principle enables achieving high velocities of sprayed material particles, which ensures the formation of dense, hard, and low‑oxide coatings — especially effective for metals, alloys, and cermets.
A design feature of the IRS K2 gun is the radial and symmetrical feed of powdered material directly into the divergent section of the nozzle, where it is accelerated to supersonic speeds. Particle velocity with this system ranges from 400 to 700 m/s, and heating temperature ranges from 600 to 2000 °C, which allows working with powders having a diameter greater than 5 micrometers. Using kerosene as a fuel makes the process not only effective in terms of coating quality, but also cost‑effective due to the high deposition rate.
